Mazda Motor Corporation has updated its carbon neutrality roadmap and set an interim 2030 target for its domestic plants and offices*1, which account for around 75% of its carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, as part of its plan to achieve carbon neutrality across global manufacturing facilities by 2035.
With this update, Mazda set a new interim CO2 reduction target for fiscal year 2030 of 46% or more compared to 2013 levels, in line with Japan’s national target.
In anticipation of future developments in alternative fuel availability and technology, Mazda has updated its carbon-neutrality roadmap to enable a more flexible and stable energy procurement strategy that supports its operations while reducing CO₂ emissions.
Under the new plan, the company will drive decarbonisation by introducing a gas cogeneration system*2, fueled by pipeline natural gas derived from LNG*3, which uses proven power generation technology. The system will also allow Mazda to transition in phases to hydrogen – a key fuel for achieving carbon-neutrality – with only minor equipment modifications. Mazda aims to advance decarbonisation in line with the broader adoption of carbon-neutral fuels in society.

Moving forward, Mazda will work together with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. to develop the system specifications, focusing on achieving high energy efficiency and enabling optimal energy management tailored to factory operations. The company will also promote the transition in partnership with local energy providers Hiroshima Gas Co., Ltd., and Chugoku Electric Power Co., Inc.
Mazda is pursuing carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain by 2050, focusing on three key pillars: energy-saving initiatives, the use of renewable energy, and the adoption of carbon-neutral fuels. Through these efforts, Mazda is committed to building a sustainable and prosperous society in collaboration with partner companies and local communities.
